Bob Dylan's When the deal goes down- On super 8/8mm

Post by Dr_Strangelove »

Not only is it a good song, but its shot on super8/8mm with Scarlett Johansson starring in it.

Thanks I was looking for that. Imagine to be the lucky guy/girl that got the assignment: "here's a bunch of carts/rolls of K-40, go out and shoot some scenes with Scarlett Johansson having fun and dressed retro."

I can't believe I just watched this pile of dung.

When one tries too hard, but with no vision or ability, a pile of dung is sure to result.

I like Scarlett but I couldn't watch more than a minute of it. Why does their Super 8 always have to be so grimy with light leaks everywhere? Bob Dylan is not good now, either.

Hi;

Coz that's what the main stream film industry thinks S8 is all about I believe. Why would they use S8 to capture clean and "professional" images when they have S16, 35, or HD.

Definitely, but it's still irritatingly cliche.

Who directed this?

I do agree with Evan. But I found that the director had used the gritty aesthetics as a type of memory. And you will notice little cuts where there so called happy memory is mixed with some rather nasty almost Lynch like nightmare visions. But still subtle enough not too take too much notice.

So from that point of view I found it quite well done - as a story telling that is (and an homage to the old rythm'n'blues legends). But the use of super 8 is quite unmotivated. This dirty and gritty and with light streaks every five seconds is not how I remember home movies of the time.

And I have been bored with Dylan since 1990.

Youze Guyz it's not super 8! It's Standard 8, AKA Regular 8mm. I've shot both Standard 8 and Regular 8 stocks. I would say it's actually about five or six rolls of the stuff, all shot in different scenes to imply typical home movies of the time... Super 8 was invented in the mid 60's... this period was the 50's...

I've got loads of reels made by my parents in the late 50's till late 60's. That music video's style and shooting technique is typical of the stuff of that time...
Would any telecine business operator would like to comment?

I know alot of my stuff from today is similar, but with my kids as actors.... not glams like Scarlett...

I quite liked it... I don't get too upset when people use 8mm as a shorthand for home movie nostalgia because, believe it or not, it's a home movie format! :)

Liked the creepy ghost train and masked dancers...

This is Regular8 alright. No doubt about it. At least supposed to look like it. The light leaks are from when the reel is flipped and the other side of the film is to be exposed. ;)

I guess they could have just opened the camera to get more "light leaks" to shoose from (since they wanted to get some of that in the video), but it is still very much a "standard feature" in regular8. Each and every Regular8 reel has this totally overexposed light leak strip in the middle of the reel (until someone cuts the reel and removes it).

believe it or not, but I have actually seen shakier footage from clients... And with each scene extremly short, like 1 to 3 seconds. Several hours of it (well at least a few hours) with 3 to 4 seconds being the longest clip. It was not fun to transfer...

"Hey, at least they shot it in super 8." - No, they didn´t. They shot it in Regular8. ;)

I liked the concept but felt there was a huge over-use of the fogging effect. Never cared for Dylan, even in his hey-day.

Thanks for posting this. I meant to pick up a copy on Dylan´s new record in Toronto before coming down to PEru (where I am now shooting a doc) I think Dylan is making his best records now. I like some of the old records, but let´s face it, they are old records.

Scarlett Johansson on Kodachrome!! I like it...
