Andreas,

Your post is a very useful piece of work, thanks for going to the trouble of putting it together.

I think the film making and labs communities need to reach out to Kodak to help build this "ecology of film" their executives have been banding about which will mean a chnage in our thinking from make do and survival to building for the long term.

Thanks Andreas! I don't have a Twitter account, but looks like Kodak replied to the call, so maybe we'll see someone here soon?

There has been a lot of media coverage of this, the super 8 camera and Technics 1200 turntable seem to have been the items that media reporters found the most fascinating.

What's great is that almost all the media attention has been positive. While some claim to understand the concept and others simply think it's a great piece of analogue retro.....everyone has bee positive. The only negative comments I've seen are in photography forums and other retro tech forums. Strange that the very people who have been asking for a new super 8 camera for 20 years, are now crying that it's either too expensive, or not expensive enough, or it's awful because it doesn't contain Feature X.

It's really interesting. The most negative comments I have read have been on some motion picture film professionals' mailing lists. Some people are angry, sad, hate super-8, hate any film that isn't reversal film, think this is a unbelievably bad decision by Kodak and so on. I guess some people would rather have seen Kodak stop manufacturing film altogether than become interested in it again (in this "wrong" way). It's surprising and -- at the same time -- not surprising at all.

Anyway -- regarding the positive attitude in media: just today the biggest newspaper in Finland published an rather positive article on analog making a comeback. The focus of the article is on photography, but the (young) person interviewed has also shot some 8mm and 16mm film. They also mention the new Super-8 camera from Kodak! :)

Yes, it is strange that people that should be the most excited are the most doubtful. Yes, it would be great to have Kodachrome back. I'd actually be really happy with Velvia (Fuji, come back!). But that ain't happening...yet. It would be nice to have pin-registration. But honestly, the imperfections of the format is what Kodak is counting on and what the average person probably wants.

I can't get a feel for exactly what market Kodak is going for. People like us are going to shoot film almost no matter what, so they must be going for average consumers or at least video hobbyists. They seem to be targeting "professionals" but I'm just confused on what "professional" is going to let a 22 year old intern at Kodak scan and color their film? Even at $75 per cartridge it's not really an amazing deal or anything. 16mm isn't THAT much more money but it is a quantum leap in quality. I guess Super 8 is a stepping stone and more people will jump into 16 and 35 from it.

Maybe they'll do a new version of a K-100 for 16mm!!!

They ARE making it easier and simpler with will help people get into it...should be an interesting year!

Exactly this. For most people the thought of loading film and having the chance of ruining exposed footage is terrifying. Super-8 is in that sense really easy to use. Now, with a new reliable camera and all-in-one package of processing and telecine it just won't get easier than this to shoot motion picture film.

As for image quality, I think for many the aesthetics of this film are what they are looking for instead of sharper than reality and cleaner than life video. Super-8 won't be mistaken for video, that's for sure.

OK so I am unlikely to buy the new camera, though I have to say if the price drops below $400 it's not impossible that I might get one. I just don't really need it as I have several good, functional cameras and even a donor camera for spares for my Elmo Super 110. The negative film/process/scan deal isn't attractive to me as I usually shoot reversal.

But I welcome an initiative that might just get more cameras out there in use, and result in more super 8 film being sold. It's certainly given the format more media attention than it's had in over 30 years. I know quite a lot of people who assumed super 8 completely died years ago. All of that is great, and should mean more film sold and that is positive for all of us no matter whether we are professionals, students or amateurs shooting super 8 for fun. Indeed more film sold should be celebrated even if you don't shoot super 8...because everything that keeps the film manufacturers going is to be welcomed.

Ferrania could be our saviour for colour reversal film. And again, the more people are interested and the more working cameras there are out there...the more film Ferrania will sell too. Even if 10% of people buying the new camera just try a couple of cartridges of Ferrania and one of Adox....That hopefully brings availability up, and prices down.

And it's great for Kodak. They've had more positive headlines as a result of this than they have enjoyed in the last 10 years. I'm not going to criticise it just because they're not relaunching Kodachrome process-paid at 1980 prices. That's a pipe dream, rather like vinyl records being sold in my local supermarket....oh, look...records in Tesco!

That is a very cool film. Thanks for the link! My favorite part was unseen - the little girl going to B&H Photo to buy some super 8 film... :--))

Thanks for sharing. They should have brought the pistol grip, and it didn't appear that Jimmy knew much about film... at all.

A shame.....but if someone had said two months ago that a brand new Kodak super 8 camera would be shown on mainstream TV in January 2016.....
