how did they make the writing on the film at the start of this video? I'd love to replicate that in Super 8. Is it scratched out leader? Some sort of selective exposure?

Black writing.
Telecine is of neg film.

Blue covered it. I have done it a few times with a "Sharpie" marker,
Pull that old movie camera out of the closet! I'm sure it's hungry for some film!

Yes, write with a permanent marker on exposed film before telecine.
