is 16fps the "normal" frame rate for regular-8?
I just realized that the Kodak 500 projector I got does not seem to have any frame rate controls. Considering that, is there a standard FPS? It doesn't seem to say anywhere what this projector's single speed actually is.
f/22 and be there

Regular 8 started off with 16 fps and (partly) switched slowly over to 18 fps in the 60's. The best example are the two Leicina 8SV I own: the older model with 16 and 24 fps, the newer model with 18 and 24 fps. With the projectors it was similar I guess; I mean on the Eumig D models ( switch between Regular 8 and Super 8 ) they didn't even bother to put 16 fps on anymore.
I don't know the Kodak 500, so I can't help you with its frame rate.

I would say that there is about an equal amount of 16 and 18 fps in regular-8. Then there is the odd speeds as 24 fps and down towards 14 and even like 10-12 fps.
Based on the thousands of meters that I have transferred.

I don't have an option on my super 8 cameras but I belive it is 18fps. I shoot all of my double-8 at 18fps. I believe most of the people in Hollywood shoot at 24fps
Pull that old movie camera out of the closet! I'm sure it's hungry for some film!

I shoot all my films 18 fps regular 8 and super 8 as well. Can we notice the difference between 16 and 18 during projecting or after a digital transfer?

All my regular 8 cameras are 16fps. I have 5 Canon Ciné Canonets and love them.
But yes, some did switch to 18 as standard in the late 60's.

Got 5 lined up on my shelf. I load two of them at a time and they fit in each pocket of my shorts. Paid about $9.95 for each.

I think I am going to have to get myself one! I just learned that some of them were made by bell and howell...they made awsome cine cameras in their day! I shoot with two bell and howells for super 8.

For a short while B & H distributed Canon products in the U.S. Also Mamiya, and some darkroom brands. Just like Honeywell once distributed Pentax. Or how the Nikkorex was really made by Minolta....

Re: is 16fps the "normal" frame rate for regular-8?
Seems like there would not be a visible difference between shooting at 16 and projecting at 18. My Sankyo has 12,16 and 24. I tried to set it between 16 and 24 to approximate 18 but at a certain point it just jumps from 16 to 24.
I was also looking for thoughts on 16mm at 16 fps. Wasn't that it's original standard? I have a B&H projector, but it only runs at 24 for sound.

Re: is 16fps the "normal" frame rate for regular-8?
This thread starts hinting at "what is reality!" I find most 8mm is just fine when converted to 16fps using cinecap. Rare is the day I ever see regular 8 shot at 18fps. But then, on my H8 that's what I do. I still convert it at 16fps on cinecap.
Bottom line, unless you have something that really cries out for exact timing, you will be close enough with either choice. I would always err on the 16fps if only because most uneducated audiences WANT to see the herky jerky motion of old school film and so I refuse to let them see that...

It should also be pointed out that unless your fifty year old camera and projector have been recently lubricated and calibrated, there is only a remote possibility that the speed setting reflects the speed the mechanism is actually moving at.

Use a strobe through the shutter if you can...not always possible but it is on some!
