Next best thing? (DV cams for home transfers)

What digital camera(s) (underneath the new Canon HV20 model, and the newer Sony, etc models) will yield the best results for home transfers? Or without the 24P are most other cams pretty much similar?
There can be no thought of finishing, for "aiming at the stars" both literally and figuratively is a problem to occupy generations, so that no matter how much progress one makes there is always the thrill of just beginning.
