So whatever happened to Mr.T?

Post by Patrick »

Remember that tough guy who was one of the cultural icons of the 1980s? Probably best known as one of the members of 'The A-Team'. He was also a TV wrestler, often competing with the likes of Hulk Hogan, and appeared in movies like Rocky 3 and some B grade comedy about taxi drivers. He seemed to have disappeared off the map. Does anyone have any ideas what became of him?

Mr. T came to the fore front originally by winning the Worlds Best Bouncer contest on TV. My friend, David Ogle who played Killer in Urban Cowboy was the bouncer at Gilley's Club and they trumped up a tv contest to break Mr. T only Killer took the contest seriously and almost won. They finally had to rig a door with heavy plywood so Killer couldnt break it down on the last contest event.

David was very bitter about the rigging of the contest and was a wonderful, sharing person. He died about ten years ago from heart failure after staying up for about a week with no sleep.

If you want to see him get a copy of Urban Cowboy. He and I played checkers almost every day on the movie set. I sure miss him.

He was one of the promotional team on a travelling PR tour for TVLand at the same time as my roommate in NYC. He's been around the industry for a long time and nobody seems to have anything bad to say about him. Tim thought he was a nice, geniune, generous guy.

Did you have to knock him out to get him on an airplane every time you went somewhere?

That rings a bell. I believe T was a "bouncer" (dont know if he was a real bouncer) at a club in Chicago. If I correctly recall, the Worlds Greatest Bouncer contest was staged in Chicago. Since we were with Paramount and the Brokows Id have to assume that T was with them as well.

I seem to remember seeing Mr T in his pre-A-Team days on TV in that "World's Greatest Bouncer" contest. If I'm not mistaken, one part of that competition involved tossing midgets. I can't remember what the other "events" were.

I saw him guest appeared on a TV show last year...it was about stuntmen and their contributions to the film and tv industries. He showed up and presented a trophy to a famous stuntmen...and I tell you he still looks the same and sound the same after all these years, good old Mr T.

At work I occasionally do dubs of the A Team, still fun to watch and funny. 80's primetime tv from Hollywood is still the best, all shot on grainey technicolor film.

That is good to know that he still very much active and in 'the business.' It's just as far as Australian broadcast television is concerned, I havent seen any footage of Mr.T since the 1980s. I guess the sort of shows and ads he appears in now are exclusive to the US. I just remembered another show he made an apearance on during the 80s - 'Different Strokes.'

"...and I tell you he still looks the same and sound the same after all these years, good old Mr T."

I can't explain why but I had a strong feeling that he still looks very much the same now as he did back then.

Definitely. I just started the first season of Miami Vice. There's just something about the lighting and overall feel that's "right."

You mean film processed by the Technocolor lab.
