SUPER 8: BACK IN EVERY MAJOR TOWN IN BRITAIN!

Post by Mogzy »

Good news! following 64T's appearence in the latest Jessops catalogue, my local store now has rolls of the stuff on the shelf which haven't even been "specially ordered". They also stock Super 8 splicing tape and cine cement!

Although this is only one stock, it means that any newbie picking up a camera can go to Jessops and buy film for their camera. For processing they give out the Widescreen Centre's details which means that via Jessops, the newbie can get their first film and access to all the details they need to get started without using the internet.

Well done Jessops- after a short absence, super 8 is once again available on the high street of every major town in Britain!

After placing an order with 7dayshop in Guernsey last week I was later informed by email that they were out of stock of Ektachrome...I then remembered the recent post that Jessops were stocking E64 so gave my local store in bournemouth a call..only to be told at first that someone had been in and bought their entire stock!!! Luckily they did in fact have two carts left which I then picked up :) Little bit more expensive than other places but the convenience of just walking in to virtually any town centre and being able to pick up some stock is cool. It also meant that I was able to get out with the camera in some fine English Spring sunshine and shoot some film on the weekend.

It's brilliant isn't it? Is there any other country in the world where a chain camera store in every town stocks super 8?

I'm in the North of England, and I shall be travelling to Woking (south of London) this weekend, where they have two camera stores which formerly stocked K40- Jessops and a local store called Harpers. I shall be checking out both, naturally!

In the last days of K-40 all the stores I visited told me that there had been a steadily increasing demand for super 8 over the last couple of years, though it was irregular and they could go for weeks without selling a cart and then have five different people asking for it on the same day!

This has to be excellent news for newcomers/ the curious.

I must say, though, the Americans appear to have the best processing facilities if they can drop off their films at local supermarkets!

Salutations to both Jessops and Kodak! :D

£11.99 a roll may be good, but what about paying for processing? As I said in a previous post, the best COMBINED deal that I have found is from Blue Audio Visual in London, who are offering it process paid including postage back for £18.99. Their website seems to be useless, best to call them on 020-7713-6865, or visit them at 44 Duncan St, Islington

Yes, that I concede, but the fact that you can just pick it up "anywhere" once more has to be a good thing. I send my films direct to Andec with €15 cash got from the post office for about £10.

As much as anything I hate giving Jessops any money, these days all the staff they seem to employ are completely brain dead. None of them seem to know anything about photography, which is a pretty funny situation for a 'camera specialist'.

Regardless of who its bought from, I would encourage everyone to buy from local small retailers. Ultimately it is people like Blue in Islington who keep the whole Super 8 thing going, as they sell not only the stock, but also cameras, bulbs, splicers, editors, etc etc etc.... This is something that Jessops or 7-day-shop will never be interested in doing. Also people like that know what they're talking about and are interested in the subject. Try finding that at Jessops.

Rant over.

I'd be agreeing with Tankerplot here - after reading this thread I thought I'd hold my tongue until I managed to see for myself.

Went into my local Jessops store in Manchester yesterday to find they had just a single cart of 64T - hardly a demonstration of support for the format. They don't really need my money in their business model - therefore I'm buying from a those independents who really invest their own time and effort in our field of film.....

I agree that jessops don't try. Before Christmas i phoned them up to see if they had any K-40. They had two carts and i explained that i would come and collect them. When i got there they un synpotheticly said that they had sold them 2 hours ago to a filmschool.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. I always use independent retailers when I can. In particular I would like to mention Samson Cameras in Liverpool and Harpers in Woking which do Super 8 and accessories as well as those for whom cine is a specialist line such as The Widescreen Centres in London and Nottingham.

It is true most of the staff seem to be braindead these days. I was just glad to see that Super 8 will still be available in every town as a result of Jessop's policy of continuing to stock super 8.

Just phoned two local branches of Jessops to see if they stocked 64T.

At first store, the youth on the phone referred to it as 'tape' and suggested I try another branch in town (Norwich).

Phoned this other branch. Another youth informed me that 'it (64T) was becoming very rare' they didn't stock it, but could order.

Forget Jessops. If it isn't digital (spit) they don't seem to want to know!

Something to remember about Jessops is that they often have at least two stores in one town - one small store where they simply handle basic items, and the other a larger better stocked and more knowledgable staff.

I dont know what to make of jessops at the moment - I went into the coventry branch a couple of weeks ago to discover it had been "updated" and seemed to resemble a small Currys outlet (major UK electrical goods store) rather than a photographic store. - I pretty much gave up going there at that point, but this what people are reporting here does sound more encouraging.
