I just posted a commercial I shot on 64T Super 8. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCljQk_itT4

Unfortunately, the film to video transfer wasn't that great. I used an 85b filter on the lens which warmed up the image a little too much and then the transfer warmed it up even more, which I corrected a bit in Premiere. The projected image looks much better, especially compared to the transferred and compressed YouTube video version.

Anyways, tell me what you think of the film!

I'm shooting my first rolls tomorow in my canon 518 sv autozoom. Good too see some other users with the same camera.

is there some consensus (maybe a thread already in existence) about the best workflow and/or codec for going to youtube? i know they do... something... with it once they get a vid. so my question is, what's the best thing to start with before you-tube-ifying it?

forgive me if this makes no sense. i've never done the youtube thing with a clip, but my partner jeff did with some DIY 16mm xfer and he seemed to degrade the original with every choice he made. (and what we had rather sucked to start with.)

fwiw, this footage was shot by phil rizzuto while on the field with dimaggio and mantle. we bought mr. rizzuto's home movie collection (camera original reversal film) from a sports memoribilia auction. the family movies are really amazing --

- very well composed, focused, etc.;
- solid camera, no unnecessary movement, jerkiness, panning, etc.;
- effective takes and shot lengths, most if not all edited in camera (the few splices look like film breakages rather than editing)
- beautiful color even after all these years (most of this stuff probably shot in the 50s and 60s)

this all seemed true whether shot by him, his wife or his kid(s). video may be "democratizing" but it ain't making folks better at capturing the moments of life...

perhaps a faster assembly would render better together.
however it appeals to the idea to me.

320x240 and as big as possible within the limit. there's no gain in using larger sizes since this is what they resize to, and having as little compression as possible is pretty much a no-brainer. i use mpeg-4 and it works great. i tried pjpeg before since i figured an i-frame codec wouldn't lose as much in recompression, but while you get about the same quality as with mpeg-4 it causes gamma shifts in their conversion.

(try "their" conversion yourself. just resize to 320x240 and encode as a 300kb/s flv, i.e. sorenson h.263)

Most of the super 8 footage that I shot at the Brooklands Centenary Festival in June.

I tried 320x240 MPEG1, and while it looked OK before I sent it to Youtube, they've made it look quite horrid. Maybe compare with my video shot at the same event, also on Youtube.

yes, the problem is rarely on your side. if the version you upload looks good you've done all you could. the exception is if you get unexpected artifacts like gamma shifts and jerky images, then you need to consider a different upload format. if it just looks "bad", welcome to youtube. ;-)

I may try mpeg4 encoding next time.

The mpeg-1 file looks pretty good, certainly no jerky motion. What I dislike so much about the youtube compressed version is the blockinmess and the fact that it looks out of focus!

that's because it's encoded as 320x240 but displayed at a higher res, like 400x300 or so. click the little rectangle icon to see it at its native size. much sharper but also, duh, smaller.
