ok, here we go.. since andreas ftp server is down i'll only post one sample first since i'm not sure how my provider handles the bandwith.

the photo was shot with a Nikon FE2, 2.8/28mm lens stopped down to f5.6 around 1/125sec with a tripod. filter was a Tiffen 85B.
scanned with an Imacon 848 at 8000dpi resolution, no sharpening, no dust removal, applied auto levels in photoshop, embedded color profile for the geeks.

full size 35mm slide scaled down to 1000pixel:

super8 sized area at full resolution:

Wow. Grain central! :(

I wish they'd given us 100D instead. :(

personally i think that's pretty ok
maybe you dont quite realize what 8000dpi means. i'll try to scan some K40 to have a comparison.

hey christoph,

would you mind getting a super 8 size image of the pipe closer in the picture, just so i can se the grain pattern on somthing not so far away.
i warned you not to go out tonight...

sure thing, here you go:

pls keep in mind that usually we see small crappy scans like this:

no offence intended, but this really isn't some 500 line 3chip camera with NTSC colorspace and DV compression or a 100dollar flatbed scanner with 9600dpi interpolated ;).

so in actual, the E64T would be pretty decent. I think it would look great on a DV transfer.

I've said enough on EPY v. K40. But to be fair, the stock will be sharper in Super 8 than an equivalent size filmed through a 35mm lens.

thanks christoph, i really like the greens, i like the k40 greens a lot and i was afraid 64t was going to be muted in comparison, but it is still kinda "pushed" IMO, looks good.

Actually, I think the film looks pretty promising, christoph. I'm looking forward to trying some out in Super 8 format. Thanks for doing the hi-res scans.

I don't think it looks bad at all. Thanks for taking the time to show us these things christoph.
I'm curious (this may be a no-brainer to a more experienced person), how do you accurately determine what the Super8 area of a 35mm still would be? Thanks again for posting the frames! I can't wait for August 1 so I can buy some carts of 64T (assuming they don't screw us on the realease date!)

You can scan a piece of the frame that is equal in size to a Super 8 film. John Pytlak mentioned the size in another thread where I posted some scans of 4x5 EPY 64T.
John_Pytlak wrote:Standard SMPTE 157 specifies the Super-8 camera aperture area as 6.22 x 4.22 millimeters.

Standard SMPTE 154 specifies the projectable image area as 5.31 x 4.01 millimeters.
I used the 5.31 x 4.01 size in my example from the 4x5 film. I imagine christoph did something similar.

superb job Cristoph.

to me this looks very promising and with those images in motion the grain should hardly be n issue at all.

some s8 gear may produce even sharper images but since the exposure time wil be up to a typical 40-60th it may be some equalisation between the two.

and for those allergic to S8 grain; go DV.

this is after all FILM and grain is allways going to be part of that in S8 but with good knowledge in your shoot/exposure grain is minimized.

thus; no complain abt grain please - if you cant live with it - you got the options to go DV or 16mm.
