Here's Super-8 I've shot

The B/W at beginning is Vision 200T, most of video is Super16 on 250D
Later in video 200T again in caravan with band and waking along country road.
I don't like K40, many of my films lost at lab.

Excellent, both the 200T looks superb - I know it is compressed etc but some shots could be easily be confused for std.16.
The S16 250D (I that the new V2 250D or the old Vision 250D?) looks beautiful.

curious though,
1. what camera did you shoot with
2. where did you get your telecine done
3. what format did you ouput your telecine to
4. did you do any pre-production stock/camera tests
5. any other technical information you can provide about what you have shot?
6. what codec did you use to compress your footage/what compression ratio/settings
...may have some more questions once i download the damn quicktime plug in.

Camera: Canon 1014XLS
TELECINE: URSA DIAMOND to DIGIBETA - TODDAO London
Film processed on site.
STOCK TESTS: Used on David Viner video - see below
No flicker with uncorrected 50Hz lightning at 24fps using 220' shutter on Canon XLS.
METERING: used internal as incidental and reflective meter and compared readings.
FOCUS: With tape measure to film plain.
COMPRESSION for site: sorry I don't know.
I also shot 'Long Gone Honey' entirely on Super-8 200T using 10 camera.

Really nice, also the david viner stuff. i especially like the vision 200 stuff cince I like the mood of grainy pictures. Wish I could see it on a tv monitor.
I expected the vision 200 stock to be more grainy and less sharp, but then this is a small compressed format....

FLICKER
Sorry this tip was added as an extra.
I did tests for The Corrs live in Lisbon. All HMI's flicked.
With Nizo Pro, horizontal white banding on every frame.
With crystal sync Beaulieu OK
With Canon 1014XLS 220 shutter at 24 OK
With Nizo Pro at 25fps: Rubbish
HMI's for music gigs not always flicker free unless someone asks.
If shooting video, no problem, if shooting Sync no problem, if shooting Super-8 suddenly problems.

nice work on the tara film. shots are composed very nicely. good use of depth in the forest without it becoming distracting/imposing.
You used the tape measure eh? I always thought the markings on the 1014xls were slightly off and always have done crash focusing by eye to make my marks.
Will keep those thoughts in mind about using HMIs in the future. May be a simpler solution to just shoot with the 220 deg shutter... it too bad though, that when you use the xl220 you start to _lose the filmick_ feel. No real strobing on pans/motion becomes too smooth and 'starts to feel like video'. That's my beef with using a 220 deg shutter.
strong feeling to the mr.david stuff, too bad there is so much artifacting in the compression to even have a clue as to what fomat you shot that on.

have you compared the image quality of the
NIZO PRO w/ the 1014xls?
I find the nizo shoots more 'magenta' and has a raw/urban feel.
The Canon seems to shoot a warmer image and even with a 150 deg shutter it still doesn't seem to strobe like the nizo with motion.
I would MUCH rather shoot with the 1014xls though, it has such a nicer feel to it and the viewfinder is incredible in comparison to the nizo.
The nizo just is FAR more versatile with all the manual features availble on it.

Nizo Pro
I'm not fan of Nizo Pro: the viewfinder & fstops are difficult to see.
I have had every Nizo I've used breakdown on me after a while.
With tape measure I have never failed, and this has been the case when working at 1.4 on Canon, shallow d.o.f, but perfect results using tape measure.
I cannot trust viewfinders, 8mm / 16mm etc.
However D.o.f preview on 16mm lens is also great help.
I use my Canon to capture DV footage back to Super-8 using 500T super-8 neg.
D.o.f shallow, but with measure, it works perfect. Dv back to S8 is Gr8.
I did give up Super-8 for a while, and sold all my cameras, but along came two Canon 1014XLS and I would never look back, best cameras I've ever had.
