Standard 8mm to 2K Digital Scans

Post by Jonathan Guilbert »

Hi, I've transferred some of my standard 8mm film shot 47 years ago using a Lasergraphics scaner to 2k Files. Edited and added sound. I think the picture quality is amazing and doubt that digital films will last quiet so long. The films are about a historic colliery railway in Manchester UK I filmed in 1969/70 with steam engines moving coal. There are 4 films in the series so far.

Good filming technique, extremely nice and very informative too.
Steam engines and clockwork cameras, poetry in motion, exquisite !

In the 4th part look at the counterweight on that middle driver! That's not supposed to be in that spot, how did that happen? But anyway I like what I'm seeing here, it's a shame beautiful land keeps getting developed like this. When will it end? So now that you live in New Hampshire what do you do now? Look at the Claremont and Concord?

Absolutely brilliant. I live only 7 or 8 miles away from Astley green colliery, im in Hindley Green and have visited the museum 5 or 6 times . Do the lads at the museum know about your films?
An old mate of mine volunteers there, hes in his 80s now and worked down the pit all his life until they shut them all.

Would you mind if I forwarded them your YouTube downloads?

Also, what camera did you use?

Well spotted, the reason for the different positions of the counter weight on the middle driving wheel is the fact that the engine has inside cylinders and the middle wheel set has two internal cranks at 90 degrees to each other causing the wheels to be oddly positioned balance that axle.

Check out my website to see what I do:

But you're right Claremont and Concord quite haven't got the same excitement nor has the North Conway Railway.

I have been in touch with the Museum. I don't know whether they have passed it round but you're welcome to share with them too.

The camera was a Chinon Concord B with a wide angle adapter on the front. I was only able to afford it because super8 was the in thing and standard 8 was on the way out. The amazing thing was I was able to shoot on 2 minutes of film before flipping the roll over on the run and the edit ratio was almost one to one.
