Conventional scans of UP8 don't make full use of typically available sensor areas.

An alternative idea, particularly when targeting cinemascope anamorphic projection, is to scan UP8 using an anamorphic lens. The resulting scan could then approach the same pixel dimensions as a 2K cinemascope target: 1828 x 1556. Even when not targeting a cinemascope print, anamorphic scanning would yield better results as it would increase the vertical resolution of the scan by two.

I did a quick test using a Rodenstock Rodagon Enlarger lens, coupled with an Iscomorphot S8/2X anamorphic lens, and was able to get a good clean mapping of the UP8 frame area to the desired digital sensor area.

Shown below is the relative digital scaling required when targeting a 2K 35mm CINEMASCOPE PRINT (1828 x 1556) given the 2K ULTRAPAN8 scan done in the inaugural shoot. As can be seen the height of the digital scan must be digitally scaled up by a factor of 2 before printing to 35mm film. By using an anamorphic lens during scanning, you would avoid this digital scaling, yielding greater fidelity in the result.

A most impressive anamorphic scanning test, Carl! Great work.

For some reason your original text was never prepended to the attached images. You will have original UP8 scanned footage soon enough to farther your ongoing tests.

I also have a forthcoming UP8 announcement which may or may not be ready by tomorrow.

Jacques Derrida introduces an idea in one his last works called "messianism", which he borrows from Jewish mysticism, but it's messianism without the messiah. The idea is that one cultivate an appreciation towards tomorrow (such as a uptopia, a second coming, the arrival of extraterrestrials, some revelation, etc.) but without any requirement for the anticipated or expected event taking place.

For example, a trailer for a movie in which there is no movie. Or Close Encounters of the Third Kind without the final scene. Or Frankenfurter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show 'ending' his song with:

"So come up to the lab, And see what's on the slab, I see you shiver with antici."

What is more important to Derrida is not the content of any anticipated event but the anticipation itself. Derrida is positing a sense of optimism, promise, hope, but without any requirement for the actual objects or targets of those things needing to exist or occur. An indefinite deferal. Deferance. The cat remains alive or dead indefinitely.

So whether a forthcoming announcement regarding UP8 occurs tomorrow, another day, or even if it never takes place, one can still appreciate the announcement of that forthcoming announcement.

Slightly OT, what's the current status of Fomapan in Standard 8? I recall reading somewhere that it would be returning in 2012, but Silverprint in London still don't have it.

Also, is the 500T neg that the Widescreen Centre used to stock still available anywhere in Standard 8? Edit: By that I mean fresh 500T, not the ancient stuff that's floating about.

There used to be a Standard8.org resource, but I take it that's disappeared seeing as all I get is unrelated advert pages when I try it now. Is there a list anywhere of the currently available Standard 8 stocks and where to get them, that's up to date? If not, perhaps we could start one here as a sticky post?

It is fully available time ago, for example in Wittner and other common shops.

My apologies to Mr. Nowill.

Here is a revised list absent the 3x Kodak Estar (Polyestar) based films. I just figured out the Kodak coding signifying acetate based films, i.e.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mo ... ilm_stocks

"Eastman Kodak

In films from 1950 on, the first 2 digits (the prefix) of the 4-digit emulsion number identify the gauge and base of film[7]:

Prefix Description
52 Acetate-base 35 mm (or larger) camera film
53 Acetate-base 35 mm (or larger) lab/print film
72 Acetate-base 16 mm or 8 mm camera film
73 Acetate-base 16 mm or 8 mm lab/print film

Fuji list forthcoming.
