Kodachrome Basin State Park

Post by Tyler »

So, I just found out there is a park in Utah named after Kodachrome film. I'm going to be there tomorrow and will be taking several rolls of Kodachrome 64 with me. Should be pretty exciting. Wish I had brought my Super 8mm camera as well.

Yes there is a park there called Kodachrome. Curiously enough, its not named for the film stock, but rather for a tiny beetle. The 'K-od-achrom-e' beetle (now extinct) was a tiny (almost microscopic) yellow beetle that originally lived on buffalo dung. One of George Eastman's experimenters discovered that when collected and ground to a fine paste this beetle proved to be an excelent binding agent to adhere the early silver-hailide emulsion to various experimental substrates. This discovery meant the end for the k-od-achrom-e but not before the first 10 asa version of the kodachrome we know and love had come on the market. The sacrifice of the beetle was in vain however as it turned out that a glue made from simple ingredients (flour and water) was actually superior. A sad story memorialised in a Utah park.
Looks like a very beautiful park. Enjoy the trip!

That story is actually 100% the truth ... except for the bit about the beetle.
