4008 zm2

Post by El Jeffe »

Just got this camera and was testing it out. It has the Schneider lens and I was wondering how to set it to hand controled zoom? In the manual it says to just move the main switch to manual which also controls the iris but the servo does not seem to be disengaged it has a lot of tension still if I try to move it manually.

Thanks

...it's normal for that lens to have tension. Everything on the lens should have tension. focus, aperture, zoom. It's one of the few Super 8 cameras that actually has a cine lens..

"Tension"??

Or, do you mean that you feel a slight resistance??

Resistance is OK. Tension or the need to use force is not good. For instance. My ZMII's aperture ring has resistance but when it starts to spin it will continue to open/close as the motor is spinning but dis-engaged.

Is that what you are feeling??

Good Luck

There is definitly a lot of resistance. I tested the camera with the master switch set to auto and everything works fine. Electric zoom works great and the auto exposure is working. When I set the master switch to manual I can set the exposure but the electronic zoom no longer works and when trying to move the zoom by hand it will move but very slowly and just does not feel right. I have an Angen 12-120 lens on my bolex so I know how the zoom should feel when turning it manually. I could essentially zoom with it but it would take me 12 seconds to go from full tele to wide. It feels like the zervo is still engaged when I turn it. Kind of a shame you cannot use the electric zoom with manual exposure.

any ideas?

Jeff, the servo motor doesn't physically disengage. As Nigel remarked, there's a slight resistance (which feels like you're turning the geared servo motor by hand).

That's normal.

okay. When I move the zoom by hand with some force though it is not smooth at all. It feels like I am moving it over a geared ring.

Correct. When you adjust the zoom manually, you are rotating the zoom motor through a gear that feels slightly "bumpy." That's normal with the Schneider 1.8/6-66mm paired with the Reglomatic.

It is a consistent high-quality bumpy feeling, though. If there is any binding or sticking (or if the electric zoom isn't smooth) then you might have a problem.

From what you're told us, it sounds like you've got a happy 4008 ready to go hunting. :)

ok then everything is in perfect working order. Thanks for the help! I have never had a lens that felt like that so I wanted to make sure.
