Hello.
Does anyone know if there's a shop that still sells this stock? I've enquired with pro8mm, and they don't have any.

If they don't have any, then that's it. I think they were the only ones putting it in the Super-8 carts. I'm not surprised. When I ordered some of it this time last year, they told me they were on really low stocks. And Kodak had killed it about six months to a year before that.
I wish I had gotten more when I had the chance. The cart I got was a dud. The film had a sick color cast that not even Spectra could fix, and the pressure plate was uneven, so it pops in and out of focus--mostly out.
The camera shop where I go to has it in 16mm--which sucks because I don't have my K-3 anymore. But it hasn't moved in over six months, so I suspect that by the time I get another one, it'll still be there...
From what I understand, V2 50D is just as good and has even finer grain. When I start up my next round of stock tests, that's definitely on tap.

the colors aren't as good though from what i've seen, although i haven't shot it yet. i love the exr colors, and at 50 asa the extra grain didn't matter. i've only shot it in 16mm though, perhaps in super 8 the vision is better.cubdukat wrote:From what I understand, V2 50D is just as good and has even finer grain.

pro8/01 and pro8/45
hello,
from my experience, the vision2 50D (through Pro8/01 release up to now, that is a reformatted stock from "5201" 35mm stock) is an excellent emultion... it present much more exposure latitude than previous EXR 50D (so nammed Pro8/45 in super-8).
The new "01" stock have less contrast and so less saturated colours.
The tonal gradations are excellent. Natural colours and natural skin tones from what I have experienced up to now.
If you want more contrast or saturation, then just process in post-production.
Please note that the fine grain of this new stock might exceed what a telecine can resolve , I mean many telecines present not so good signal to noise ratio, especially when analysing super-8 source...
Considering SDTV Telecines, I beleive that a Y-Front should be able to resolve well the Pro8/01 stock (Technicolor New York, Pro8mm L.A have Y-Front telecines).
By end of december on that website : http://www.filmhalogenuros.cl , there will be a report that document how the same image of Pro8/01 was seen through an Ursa Diamond Telecine and through a Spirit Datacine. Beyond resolution, there is a big difference on how this stock is resolved in terms of signal to noise ratio.

The quality of the tones is exactly why I wanted some. I think it has to be one of the most beautiful stocks ever. I wanted to shoot some while the stock would still be fresh enough.

yes, the exr had very saturated blue and also brought out the reds and yellows very well. a polarizer, a desert, and a roll of 7245. yummy.
well, I did shot a Pro8/45 in the Atacama Desert a few years ago... interesting high contrast images if one is looking for that look... however if one's looking for details on the shadows, and to hold well those 8 stops (and more) of dynamic range... the Pro8/01 is an excellent option.
DI workflow, allows for subtle color correction (as well as density/gamma correction), so if the neg is scanned flat, you have a lot of possibilities at the grading stage... I mean that's how DI works, grading is part of the process... I beleive that a Pro8/01 could be graded to appears quite like Pro8/45 whilst the contrary would not be true (i mean to get all those details in both highlight and shadows at the same time on a high dynamic range scene). At least that's what I beleive from what I have experienced.

I agree it's nice to have stocks that have unique looks, but for that I'd go to reversals vs. negative or Double-X negative in B&W or possibly Fuji stocks. In this brave new world of Vision2 the power is in the colorist's hands.

Video Post & Transfer in Dallas has a Y-Front still but they're ready to send it to India and buy another Spirit or Millenium. Great machine for SD, especially when it's well maintained and has a good operator.Daniel wrote:hello,

my problem with it is that you never have enough time, so you never end up with what you wanted anyway, plus it's so easy to change your mind that you do, even though you shouldn't. in my opinion the new vision2 stocks don't give you the possibility of post manipulation -- they require it.cubdukat wrote:I like a stock to have its own character, but I personally do like having that kind of control.
