Surely one should use new stock to test a camera, problems in the camera may not be apparent is the likely film result is already suspect due to its age? So I shooet super8 for kicks nothing more, should I bother buying a work printer also transfering negative film stocks, can this be done at home in a way that is reasonable good??

On the way to Austrialia next Saturday yipieeee, but Im thinking as I stop of in France and Singapore on my way to Sydney and back through Brisbane I might do something in each of these places. Matt, Ive got a couple of S8 cameras a projector and an editor thats it!
No video transfer equipment or anything like that and indeed no tech expertiese in this field.
I think Ill just pay the money....

So if I understand you correctly in film Noir they wouldnt use any fill light. Maybe film Noir isnt specific enough. Can I say the new batman cartoons? The long fully black shadows etc.?
