Re: JK Sale

While I have one of these, and use it mainly for the mundane task of converting film to digital, and it can be used for blowups, etc., I think the main interest nowadays is in an artistic use. There seems to be no end to the way these have been used to explore the basic photo-chemical-mechanical asp...

JK Sale

Since these old school independent film maker machines are almost never for sale used, I thought I'd share what is apparently a pristine JK 103 Optical Printer. eBay item number:173682136884. It looks to be a model made before Jaako offered his programming board. https://www.ebay.com/itm/JK-Optical-...

David M. Leugers wrote: Thu Nov 15, 2018 8:02 pm Maybe an alternative, pretty cheap. I use one to power my Bolex EM motor and my Tobin motor I use on Bolex cameras. Toss it in some kinda bag with straps and you can easily hang it on a tripod or over your shoulder.

How did you adapt it to an XLR plug?

Battery Suggestions

My old battery belt died after about 15 years of use. http://i65.tinypic.com/aa7o2d.jpg ] Not bad, but it was always awkward to use. Never actually used it as a belt. Just hung it on a tripod or put it on the ground. I can get it re-celled I guess. But what are you guys using these days? It should p...

Re: Kodak 50D Super 8 (max 8) Sample

Very nice! Such a great scan.

I see the lens is not covering the max 8 at that focal length. Is that ok?

Re: The State of Double Super 8

Because of environmental regulations Yale can no longer process film in Santa Clarita. If you send to Yale they will farm it out to another lab. They primarily do transfers. Being curious about this, since Yale's website affirms that they process film, I called and spoke to Carlos, who has been wit...

Re: The State of Double Super 8

Yeah, good question. Looks like even Wittner no longer has DS8. As far as processing, Yale Lab, at least before their move to Santa Clarita, would process DS8, and also process FOMA. They use standard Kodak chemicals for it. The footage they did for me of FOMA looks grungy, and has touches of solari...

Re: Syncing pre-recorded sound while shooting at 12fps

Will you be projecting at something other than 12fps, say 24fps, for example? Then yes, you have to slow down the audio, if you want the effect of speaking at normal pitch, but speaking really fast. To stay in sync the camera motor should be able to maintain sync at that speed, and a head ant tail s...

Re: Film stock for Univex model A8

That old camera longs for a service. Yep. That little camera needs some assistance. Lubing it would probably fix the jitter it has. But it's got two other strikes against it. All the lenses are milky. And the camera exposes the frame in a non-standard area--somewhere between regular 8 and super 8. ...

Re: Rewinders capacity

I use those little Zeiss rewinds on their original mounting board in my makeshift darkroom, and decided against getting 800 foot rewinds to use with it. The bottom of the shaft is tapered, and I was concerned the edge of the reel might rub against it. It might work, but I wasn't sure, so I use the s...

I put lenses I haven't used for some months into the light to prevent fungus growth. Is this just a rumor? Does it work?

Re: Where do you send your lenses in for cleaning?

Paul Duclos is the best in the USA specializing in lens repair for the motion picture industry, and has been in business for decades. Lenses are shipped to him for repair from all over the world. For those who read this and may want a lens repaired which was made specifically for 8mm or super 8, he ...

Re: Caffenol Film reversal (coffee based developer!)

I stumbled across this link to a site where there is this article on reversing foma reversal film using coffee. I knew about caffenol from film processing but this is the first reference to using it as part of a reversal process. http://www.filmlabs.org/docs/citric-hydrogen-peroxide-bleach.pdf This...
