Re: Help needed with Nizo problem

After much investigation, and a second roll of Tri X, I ascertained that the film definitely wasn't running through, and there were scratches between the sprocket holes where presumably the claw isn't catching them. Could be two "sticky" carts in a row. Try winding 'em by hand a bit - if ...

Re: The state of Negative Film Processing in North America.

The end result? "Snowflakes" or perhaps "snowballs" would be more accurate... throughout the images whether exposed under bright daylight or tungsten. Has anyone experienced the same? Are you 100% certain this is not dust on the film during transfer? I ask because we transfer lo...

Re: Super 8 Silencer?

For those who do live sound with Super 8, how do you eliminate that motor noise from the camera? It's quite noisy in an enclosed room. I've been using a hoody sweatshirt but it's not doing the job and I need to constantly remove it for focal/exposure changes. I know there's foam that is made to abs...

Re: Any Super 8 features going on at the moment?

I am quite sure that with your post skills, your artist's eye, your familiarity with the different super 8 stocks and some serious experimenting, you could come up with a totally believable film-look for digital that would satisfy your clients, as far as the visual appeal goes. Thank you sir! Howev...

Re: Any Super 8 features going on at the moment?

Just a note to anyone thinking of making an S8 feature - during the making of "Sleep Always", we spent zero time correcting for jumpy super 8, zero time correcting for "etc.", and zero time trying to make it look like film, since it was film, and thus looked fantastic right outt...

Re: Any Super 8 features going on at the moment?

I find it ironic when hard-core super 8 users roll their collective eyes at digital, usually stating,"Why spend all the time trying to make digital look like super 8..." but think nothing of spending even more time trying to use digital tools to correct for jumpy super 8 due to bad carts,...

Re: Often overlooked Telecine fact.

When I went over to "frame by frame" I used a field lens to start with, but found set-up and dealing with dust on the lens a pain, so now I use "direct from gate" as only the film plane is in sharp focus; dust on the supplementary lens is not a significant issue. Great point. I ...

Re: Often overlooked Telecine fact.

Transferring film by the projector/screen/video camera method is often considered to be a poor way because transfer has to occur either at 16.667 (20) fps with a 3 bladed shutter, or 25 (30) fps for a two bladed to avoid flicker, and neither speed is standard. The real irony is that lots and lots o...

Re: Abrams on why Star Trek was shot on film and not video

I wish somebody would tell Michael Mann that film looks better then digital. His new film Public Enemy scream out loud that it was shot on HD. Yeah, I actually think some of the older directors feel they must use the new thing in order to remain "hip", or relevant. Meanwhile the kids are ...

Re: Focus Issue With Nizo Professional

I have a nizo professional with the Schneider-Kreuznach UWL III wide angle lens. I am having trouble getting the correct focus. When I look through the view finder every thing looks good, but the developed film is out of focus. Does anyone have a way to assure the focus is correct when using the le...

Re: Dangers of Digital Technology

You really can't "preserve" film at all. It is like food in a refrigerator, you can slow down the decaying process but, in actuality, the image is changing right before your eyes. Simply a great point! The ability to access those films today is more a function of ebay than it is any inher...

Re: Dangers of Digital Technology

...Because hard drives fail, discs fail... That's how digital "changes" over time - it changes into nothing at all. A spark, a magnet, a medium-high impact, the data is lost forever. Mouldy slides, torn photos, Super 8 with emulsion scaling off - these are all preferable to nothing at all...
