Sample images from the new Filmfabriek HDS scanner

Post by Andreas Wideroe »

Hi guys,
I thought I'd share 3 sample images from some tests I've done today with the new Müller HDS scanner. Super8 frames with some quick grading done in DaVinci. Looks quite alright, doesn't it?

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see some footage in motion.

The sample video they posted on youtube a few months back all looked really solid. I just wish they would provide some more 'raw' samples for download. Streaming services always introduce so much junk. Even a few seconds of raw frames would be worth seeing at proper full depth and bitrate.

Nice samples Andreas. Which camera option did you go for, the IMX174 sensor?

They look great! Are you going to offer Müller scans soon?

Hi Frank!
Yes, this is the IMX174, but I also got the ICX834 which I haven't tested yet.

Yes, I will do the first scan job this coming week. I will be offering scans up to 4K.

Hi Andreas,

I expect you know, but you need to select Video Mode 7 (in the GenICam tab) to get the camera to use 12bits of A/D. Strange they did this 10bit/12bit thing just on the IMX range in the GS3 cameras.

Not had my hands on the ICX834, will be interested in your thoughts versus the IMX174 regarding noise and dynamic range in real tests. On paper the IMX1774 should blow away the ICX834, although it is odd they equipped the latter with a 14bit A/D. The number of A/D bits is not directly related to dynamic range, but perhaps the higher CCD sensor noise requires finer steps in the A/D to minimise the effects.

S/N ratio
IMX174 45.6dB
ICX834 37.97dB

Dynamic Range
IMX174 73dB
ICX834 54.32dB

Andreas, I know it might be a huge request, but i'd be fascinated to see a examples of the same films digitized in different scanners, and I'm sure others would be too. Since few people have simultaneous access to multiple makes and models of equipment it is very hard to find good apples-to-apples comparisons of what is out there. Usually you have to try to make meaningful judgments based on totally different example footage. I don't think I've ever seen anything along the lines of 'here is the same 30 seconds of footage done on four different scanners'.

Hi Ryan!

Yes I plan to do some tests with different cameras and scanners/telecines. I will post it here, but please don't hold your breath as I don't know when. ;)

I like that it has a PTR and wetgate built in. If anyone knows of a PTR setup available somewhere in this world for less than $200, please let me know.

The camera options you guys mention are different than what I see listed? Looks like they offer 2 different Point Grey Grasshoppers, a 2K and 2.7K which are not cheap.

Tscan, the Muller scanners work with any of the Point Grey cameras (and from what I understand from their site, should work with almost any USB3vision camera). The two Muller lists on their site are recommendations, but not requirements. Andreas and RCBasher are just referring to the cameras by the imaging chip they use instead of the manufacturer model number.

So when Andreas says he has a IMX174 camera, I assume that it's the Point Grey GS3-U3-23S6, although it could very well be a IMX174 based camera from a different manufacture.

And it looks like Muller sells their PTR rollers separately. You could try bashing something together?

Andreas, it would be interesting to hear about your experiences with the Müller HDS scanner.

Is it working well?

Do you perhaps have some scanned film examples to show?

Looking great. I may have overlooked something here but which film stock is it?
