Old 1966 regular-8 4:3 to 16:9 and some other tricks

Post by VideoFred »

Hi everybody,

I have developed a wetgate scan system and I'm using liquid paraffin for it now. Yes, the same stuff you get from the doctor when you are constipated :D It was Edouard Chalaron who gave me the hint to use paraffin. You will find him on Vimeo. The liquid paraffin makes all vertical scrathes invisible and it makes the picture very 'vivid' like brand new.

Second, I'm using Frank Vine's exellent CFLed backlight system and his custom made D2D software. You will find a link to Frank's website on my Vimeo pages.

Third, I have cropped these 1024x768 4:3 files to 960x544 16:9. These files are looking very good on my full HD Sony Bravia TV. I have used my Avisynth film restoring script to remove dirt spots, stabilizing etc....

I have uploaded a few before-after files to Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/37393841 and http://vimeo.com/37394781. Please download the Xvid source files, they are better than what you will see on Vimeo.

Many greetings,
Fred.

Incredible stuff! Great improvement on the stabilization of the image.

Fred, have you tried your avisynth script with the more grainier stocks like the Vision series?

Holy $#%^ that looks incredible. It would be great if ALL old footage was transferred this way for news, documentaries etc.

Superlative, Fred! Excellent work and refinement of your already outstanding methodology. Has the 64 bit version of Avisynth stabilized?

Thank you all for the kind words :)

@Woods01:
Yes, it works on very grainy sources too.
There are some examples on Vimeo.

@Freedom4kids:
I'm not using a 64 bit version.
The 32 bit version runs fine on a 64 bits Win7 system.

@S8 Booster:
I'm happy you're back :wink:

Hi Freddy,

I am very curious. Would you provide a bit more detail as to how exactly the liquid paraffin is applied to the film? Is this done as the film is being scanned or prior? Is the substance left on the film or removed afterwards? Many thanks.

Cheers,
Jean-Louis

Hi Jean-Louis,

The paraffin is applied just before the film enters the projector. I have made a tool for this. The substance is left on the film. It's a test with old films I got from the flea market. I leave these films now for a few weeks and see what happens. I'm pretty sure that paraffin is harmless for films, but time will tell.
