Canon HV20 24P HDV 1080P Clip

Post by paulcotto »

Here is a clip from my new HDV Canon HV20 camcorder. It's in HDV Quicktime 1080P format so you must have the latest version of Quicktime installed on a fast PC or Mac to view it. Sorry for you folks that dont.

I used the new 24P mode with the film look settings while taping this. I am happy with it so far and I plan to use it for telecine work with the Blackmagic Intensity since it has HDMI out.

I thought that camcorder wasn't out until next month? I almost bought an HV10 (still might) be am holding out to see how the 20 holds up. I'll look at your clip(s) tomorrow when I'm not wireless. Thanks for posting. :)

I had a bad experience with the HV-10 and would not recommend it to anyone. Hopefully the HV-20 looks better, but from what I've read, they use the same image sensor.

Paul, do you get any faint vertical lines in your images?

...Just downloaded the file but all I got was audio. What codec did you use?

same here. i think you need fcp 5.1 to play 24p hdv. any chance you can encode it as mpeg-4 or something?

Here is a clip in MPEG2 format. I pulled it directly from the camera and converted it to MPEG2 with HDTV2MPEG2.

You can view it with mplayer or any other MPEG2 player.

Hi,

I get strange artefacts when playing back the mpeg-version. Are they caused by my video-players? Or by the encoder? Or by the camera?

Update: I encounter the same problems on my and another PC under Windows with Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic and Nero Showtime, so this most likely isn't caused by Linux/Xine/Kaffeineplayer.

I read about lots of faint vertical lines/stripes in environments with less than abundant light. Low light performance in general seemed to be the primary complaint of HV10, other than design shortcomings (no HDMI out, etc.)

You guys should try mplayer, I never had these problems on my PC or Mac so try another player. If your monitor does not support 1920X1080 you will always have artifacts. Viewed directly for the camera to my projector via HDMI is gorgeous. Absolutely the best video I have ever seen. I have never had access to any other HDV equipment before I bought this camera so I cant compare it to anything else.

zipzoomfly had them listed for $895 but they're out of stock.

Where'd you buy it from Paul?

I'd been watching this forum for several months waiting for news on the HV20...

Glad to see that the initial reports are good.

Yup, B&H is a safe bet.

When I checked B&H Saturday night they were out of stock, probably just as well, my face would probably end up on a milk carton if I ordered... 8O

Maybe if I sweet talk her awhile.

It's better to just do it and beg forgiveness later. I used the 6 months same as cash option and promised to sell some of my other equipment (yeah right).
