Dear Justin, when you use a separate exposure meter, set it for an exposure time of 1/40 of a second (shutter opening: 150°) or 1/30 (shutter opening: 220°), or there abouts. This is true for a filming speed of 18 fps, eas mentioned in the Canon manual. And yes, you should increase the actual aperture by about 1 stop, although you may want to make shoot some tests before actually filming something important.
Cheers

how about it you're shooting @ 24fps, or 36fps?... i use my meter in cine mode and that way i can adjust my fps rather than my shutter speed, however, when doing so i cannot adjust my shutter angle... is there a calculation for figuring out the light loss for when you change your shutter angle?
thanks,
justin

Any camera with a standard shutter mechanism
360° X FPS / Shutter Speed = Shutter Angle
360° / Camera Shutter Angle x FPS = Shutter Speed
360° X FPS / Shutter Speed = Shutter Angle
360° / Camera Shutter Angle x FPS = Shutter Speed
