Transfers at Dwayne's

Post by Aaron_M »

Hello,

Has anyone recently had their film transfered to mini-dv or DVD at Dwayne's photo? I was wondering if they have become any more consistent with the quality of the transfers. I had a couple of different batches of film transfered there last year and the quality varied quite a bit from transfer to transfer.

Thanks,

Aaron

Hi-
I was just about to ask the same thing. I just sent some off so I will let you know when it comes back. I do know that they use a video cinemate machine which I have heard some good things about from people that go to other labs that use them.
Pull that old movie camera out of the closet! I'm sure it's hungry for some film!

We just sent them a 3CCD Sniper Pro system to replace their 6 year old CineMate, which was not set up properly. I did not do the install for them on the new Sniper Pro so I haven't seen anything they've produced but the system was very sweet when I calibrated it here before shipping. But I don't know what they use for any kind of NLE color correction or the such. We included an Hitachi HVC20, 700 line 3CCD camera, so the results should be really sharp.

Great! I was looking at the Cinemate units on your website. Do you make them? Are the projector units that they use brand new?

I have also heard great stuff (!)about your transfers so if Dwayne's does not go over that well you will probably get some of my film.

No. As noted on our website FAQ, we make from previously existing projectors. Check out our FAQ here:

Thanks. We now use our Sniper-HD units exclusively. We scan everything in HD and then downconvert to SD if that is what the client needs.

If Dwayne's does not go over well, then tell them and give them the information they need to make it right. This is new for them so they need input from clients so they know what the market expects. Otherwise, improvements will be slow in coming.

I usually have them transfer my Regular 8 footage. The first batch back from them about 10 months ago was rough but one set from about 4 months ago showed improvement. I'll certainly give them another try with the new system. I even sent black & white regular 8 to them just for transfer.

Can't beat the price and the quality was passable for regular 8... I usually want regular 8 to look extra "home movie-ish" anyway.

Roger: Does this mean you can do regular 8 HD transfers now? What's your waiting time now?

You betcha.

About 30 days. Maybe less if we're not swamped, which we are now.

Do you get a lot of super 8 that was shot recently?

We get a fair amount. Some good and some not so good. What I really enjoy most is when we get in a ton of really well shot regular 8mm film. I swear there is nothing that looks better.

Here is our sample page:

... and that is just the opposite of what my experience with Dwayne's has been. Around 10 months ago I sent them a batch of film that came back great, and around 4 months ago I sent them a batch that was poorly transfered. This leads me to believe that the inconsistency is due more to different operators than equipment.

Dwayne's is the ONLY place left that processes Kodachrome. The results I've had for processing have been very good - haven't tried their telecine yet.

I would never have them transfer something for a final use unless I was looking for the hairs in the gate, dust bunny type look. But for just a "daily" to see what stuck to the film, it's fine for the price. $14.95? Hard to beat. I don't have a regular 8 projector so their transfer is a cheap way for me to see what's on the film.
