Shikashika: New York Premiere at the Museum of Modern Art

Super8ers,

I want to share with you the news that my Super 8 documentary short "Shikashika" is having its premiere in New York City at MOMA as part of the Documentary Fortnight in a program on New documentaries shot on Super 8 film. This little film - in many ways - was born in this forum and I want to extend thanks to Andreas and all of you for sharing knowledge about small gauge film shooting here.

The festival is Feb 11-25, and the Super 8 program will screen twice: the first show is on Feb 12 at 8 PM in the larger theater, and the second show is on Feb 19 at 6 PM in the smaller theater.

Looking forward to being in New York in February. I am currently at work with pre-production/research for some new films.

I havn't seen your film yet but based on the pictures on your site and the fine work on Super8Cities and the other clips you've shared I know it'd be a great, thoughtful film. Not at all surprised at your success.

So now that you are an overnight short film success, what are you going to do next?

I plan to continue working at short-form documentary cinema shot on celluloid. This is how I want to "do" documentary. Next?

I bought a one-way ticket to New York: Redeye + JetBlue = 99.00. I want to work in support of other documentary projects for a couple months, collaborate and network and get ramped up for new work. I think I found a sublet in Williamsburg, but not sure yet.

I'm encouraged by the fact that Power in the United States has changed hands. I see art, literature, cinema as a centrally important part of any democracy and New York is a good place to participate in the documentary enterprise so - anyway, I'm going to NYC for a while and want to step-up my citizenship.

I watched this piece tonight for the first time, for consideration for our festival, and it was very impressive. Even the students who never agreed with me liked it.

Great work Steve. Very smart to use just a tiny bit of voice (and subtitle) to provide just enough context for those who need it. In less deft hands that element would have been overdone. You knew to let the images speak for themselves.

I really struggled with the cut to be honest. It took me a year and four months before I arrived at the cut that played the 2008 circuit. (the only cut that circulates) I generated a lot of iterations and in the end only got it right with help from a team of talented editors.

Glad you liked the brief bit of Quechua monologue.

Hope the film finds a spot in your program.
