Lubricating a Bolex P1

Post by slooppools »

Hello Everyone!

I'm just getting into 8mm filming, and am thus new to this forum. I bought a Bolex P1, and, as expected, the mechanism could use some lubrication. I saw an old post on here referencing a set of instructions for lubricating Bolex cameras. I tried PMing that user, but no luck yet, so I'm turning it over to whomever wants to jump in! Does anyone know where I can find these instructions? I'm fairly tech-savvy, and I have a good assortment of hand tools, etc. Is there anything else I would need to do this job? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I've asked this before and was told to use sewing machine oil but probably to let a camera repair person do it just to avoid screwing up. Basically make sure no excess oil gets anywhere, expecially in the film path.

Might want to get a quote for a pro lube job and then if that is pricey try it yourself.

Thank you both very much! And thanks for the link to that group, filmbuff. I think I will try to do the lube myself. I'll let you know how it goes!

I used WD40 in the backwand hold to slean it out. After that I ran gun oil in a needle onto the exposed gears through the film compartment. Hean I know it was dangerous, but unscrewing one is risky too. I had no problem.
