Anamorphic lenses

Post by Andreas Wideroe »

I've been reading the Vision2 test footage thread with great interest and have a couple of questions.

1. If you shoot with a 1,5x, 1,75x or 2x anamorphic lense how do you desqueeze the image digitally in Ie. Adobe Premiere?

2. Where is a good place to look for lenses to buy, both C-mount and screw-on lenses in various thread sizes?

Cheers!

1. "Interpret footage" will change pixel aspect ratio and fps in Premiere and After Effects.

2. I got my C-mount Iscorama on ebay Germany, but they are rare.

What is the exact name/description of your Iscorama lens? Is it the Beaulieu Schneider version, or the 54, SPA, Widescreen 2000 or some other?

Just trying to figure out what lenses there are out there.

I've got a few Beaulieus so a C-mount would be great - or a 77mm for my K3.

It is the Iscorama 36 on a c-mount extension tube with iris. Box carries the name Ritter, which is a Beaulieu related company. The Iscorama can be taken of the extension tube and put on an Iscorama set for projection.

I'd love to find a 2x anamorph c-mount after seing Yemi's footage.

its the desqueezing process which I am also a little unsure about. I would'nt want to buy an anamorphic lens then find out I can't even desqueeze the image.
Does anybody know if this can be done using final cut? If not any mac based recommendations?

Thanks

Something like this (which I just won)?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 3852435213

Don't know if it'll work, fit or what the condition really is, but I just wanted to have a look at it. 8)

Hey my Iscorama 54 is x1.5 too!
(4:3 image with a x1.5 anamorphic gives you 2:1 unsqueezed)

Yes, now you just need an extension tube with a 39mm thread.

Sorry, my fault. It just seemed wider. I normally just unsqueeze to 16:9, which gives a slight stretch and uses full frame resolution.

Wonder where I can find those... any idea what I should search for?

Maybe you should ask Björn, since a lens like that would require collimation.

actually you just squeeze it vertically... i dont use premiere (as most on this forum know by now ;) but basically you just make a resize, be it using a filter or a control tag or something... 1.5x = 0.67x vertical, 1.75x = 0.57x vertical and 2x = 0.5x vertical (obviously)

personally i think that an digital resize will result in better quality than an optical one during transfer, even if you want to end up letterboxed in both cases... first you dont get the distortions and artifacts of a second anamorphic lens and in addition you start with more pixels on the video frame to start with.

Cropping the S8 film to 16:9 will lose 23% of the film area. Using a 1.5x anamorphic and chopping the sides to get 16:9 will lose 13% of the film area. So using an anamorphic lens preserved more of your film resolution.

The 1.5x Iscorama 54 that Yemi used in his shot are quite rare. The good feature about these Iscorama's is they have short barrel compared to other anamorphic lens allowing more freedom to zoom in and out minimizing vignetting. There is also a 16:9 version of this lens available for sale direct from Isco Optics which is the same size that Yemi uses but they cost 4,200 Euro. 8O

The other day, there was an Iscorama 54 sold in eBay.de for $454 so that looks like a good price in comparison.

final cut pro will do this just fine, you'll load the clip to the viewer, switch to the motion tab, open the distort field and either set the corners with absolute numbers or use the ratio slider.

there are plenty of other solution, but fcp is a must have anyway ;)

Pardon my ignorance, but are all these anamorphic lenses auxiliary lenses? They are mounted in front of another taking lens?

Widescreen Centre has lenses for video cameras to make optical 16:9; perhaps they could be used on a film camera?
