Canon 514 xl-s unusual problem

My canon super 8 is having a strange problem. When the Camera is set to R, the motor will whir, really slowly, for a few seconds then cut off, and it won't run after that. The red cue light on the front that indicates when the film is rolling will stay illuminated, but when I smack the battery grip, it'll blink off, then back on. Neither the light meter nor the battery check light will work. Does anybody know what could be wrong???
