Re: stills from diff stocks

Video Fred - have you ever projected the results of your work on the big screen? I'd love to know if the processing holds up the same when blown up 100x or so... I have not seen it on the big screen yet. My source is 1024x768. I resize it to standard PAL. I do this because those files are smaller i...

Re: stills from diff stocks

Do you recall if any of this footage was shot with a Bolex H8? Yes, the Egypt and old 1950's footage was shot with a Bolex. The 1970's Maroc film was made with top equipment: Beaulieu camera and Schneider lens. The 1960's Agfa film was made with a very simple Agfa Movex camera. Have you had any luc...

Re: stills from diff stocks

Thank you all for the compliments. I'm still using Avisynth for post processing but I have improved my scripts a lot. The script is removing nearly all dirt spots now. This is because nearly all my transfer work is with old films. I also have a script that leaves the grain as it is. About the...

Re: The future of Super 8 "SPAN 8"

I believe the Bolex anamorphic system utilized a 1.5x compression/squeeze factor. Would you guess the stock being a European version of Kodachrome II? Yes, according to the original author it was European Kodachrome and the used lens was an Iscomorphot. He still owns this lens, I have made an adapt...

Re:

I have not heard one person online say that they have successfully achieved widescreen Super 8 and thier methods they have used. A little digital magic can help a lot here. 1958 regular-8 anamorphic footage: http://www.vimeo.com/2823934 This is an older version. In the new version all dirt spots ar...

Re: Super 8 Stories

Fred--after looking at your original comment in the context of the thread, I think I might have misinterpreted your intent. You weren't really saying that a film had to have a story to be good, but that a film made in whatever medium would be good if it had a decent story, correct? Yes, this is wha...

Re: Super 8 Stories

What about films that are not necessarily about "story?" There's always a story. The artist always wants to bring a message. If there is no message, then the message is that the artist has nothing to say. And the Pet Sounds analogy doesn't fly--we're not talking about the inherent ...

Re: Super 8 Stories

Yes - there can be many reasons why film might be preferred over digital, but all else being equal, greater dynamic range wouldn't be one of them. This is 2010. New technology gets better and better. A good artist will still make good pictures, no matter the medium. Good use of DOF is very very imp...

Re: Super8 signal processing

But in other works, grain can be regarded as just noise. It is not there because the filmmaker necessarily wants it there. It is there due to various limits imposed on the filmmaker. One makes do with the limits. It is not necessarily about particularly enjoying those limits but working within them...

Re: Super8 signal processing

SR is not an illusion of definition as such. It is the reconstruction of actual emperical information - information that was distributed across a number of frames - but otherwise difficult to see in any one single frame. This is exactly what I'm doing with my Avisynth filmscript. By averaging sever...
