Re: Silver Reclamation
The wise words of AJ , There are people out there who use outdated film ! like me , And me! I think most of the 16mm I've ever shot has been outdated stock. I'll shamelessly link my own film: https://vimeo.com/31825344 Shot on decade old 7246, with few bits shot on Agfa XT (IIRC 1995 or earlier). D...

Re: DIY Dual 8 Telecine HD Digitizer under $1000?
There are a lot of great DIY telecines out there. Some are probably better than many of the commercial units as far as quality goes. But unless you are tinkerer with a nice shop and loads of time I'd say just buy one of the commercial units, transfer your film and then sell the unit on eBay after yo...

Re: Silver Reclamation
How long are these lengths of film? 400ft? What type of stock do you have?
How is the price of silver compare to the cost in time to setup a silver recovery system, recover the silver and then transport to a dealer Vs selling it via mail?

Re: DIY Photographic Emulsion
Technically you can apply emulsion onto anything as long as it will stick. I took a workshop on making emulsion a couple years ago. Its not too hard to make but applying it evenly is tricky and takes practice. Photographic papers have a coating like resin, to keep liquid from penetrating. So you'd h...

Re: Regular 8mm or Super 8?
Regular 8 cameras in general are better than the average super 8. A reflection of the era of manufacturing they come from and the fact they were targeted for a more serious photographer. The cameras are basically free in price comparison and look beautiful, all chrome and leather. But Regular 8 is a...

Re: Warmth Crashes In - All My Friends Are Cooked
Nice 80s horror film vibe! While it has cuts in it, it has the feel of being one extended take. Looks like a lot of work went into it, well done!
I take it that this is also an example of your technique dealing with the orange mask that you posted about in great detail not too long ago?

Re: New 16mm test footage - "dance 1"
Looks like the pressure plate didn't get locked down during loading. It looks great. If anything the colour footage looks rather ordinary in comparison. For the right subject matter, this 'mistake' looks like a happy accident. I might try this effect out. Nice project!

Re: Clarity on the lights for indoor shot
In general professional tungsten movie lights are 3200. Household light bulbs are about 3400. Kodachrome was tungsten balanced for 3400 as it was considered an amateur stock, while the professional colour negative and reversal films were balanced for 3200. So most of the home market movie lights tha...

Re: Cleaning 16mm Prints
Yes, the negative is more prone to scratching/damage than your prints are. Plus chances are your prints have seen decades of dust, scratches and bad splices, they won't look any worse! If you're going to do this, then fix all your old splices. Check with the lab if tape or cement splices are okay wi...

Re: Removing Orange Mask from Colour Negative Scans
Just wanted to say thank you for this great post and thread. I've been trying to tackle the orange mask problem with a DSLR mounted to a JK optical printer with mixed results. You've inspired me to revisit this task with a fresh mind, thank you!

Re: In My Image: Long lost back up tapes
Carl and others have given you some solid advice. I havn't seen your film but I personally feel that you're polishing a turd. Almost all artists are unhappy with their early work, even when it was exception. Some painters revisit a work and make touch ups or make a new work based on the same subject...

Re: Would you still buy new commercial super 8 prints?
Also, as far as the technical discussion. I've had pretty good success filming video shots off my laptop. I use it to make titles and to grab public domain shots that I can't get film prints for. You could try shooting 50D of your finished cut and then get Andec to print from that. Or you could try ...

Re: Would you still buy new commercial super 8 prints?
I've long felt that for the right project and filmmaker that you could sell limited edition film prints. There is a small market for very limited edition deluxe music recordings. Almost always by indie musicians, usually with an arty style (post-rock, electronica, ambient, etc.) they will make cds, ...

Re: 'The Secret Nuclear Bunker' New Super 8 Film
Great work. Nice job of using some simple 'home movies' to make something interesting out of the footage. I particularly like the titling work. Has a real 1960s look and feel to it.
