Re: Ektachrome returns

I can't say how pleased I am to see that some form of late model Ekatachrome 100 is coming back. I've shot a good amount of E100G in 35mm and E100D in 16mm. I hope this time around, they base the film on E100G. This was a much finer grained version than E100VS, which was the same as E100D in motion ...

Re: 100D - the low down?

Super-16 Inc is the company that can brighten the ground glass in your camera: http://super16inc.com/page3.html BAC's explanation of the why the viewfinder image is so dim is correct - unlike Super-8 cameras with permanently mounted lenses, the prism is behind the iris. Most 16mm reflex cameras use ...

Re: Does film cement keep forever?

Unfortunately, it does not keep forever, especially if the bottle's opened. I recently "restored" all my father's Regular-8 movies shot between 1961 and 1978. When I say restored, I mean redid every splice, then cleaned the film. I believe he used the same bottle of cement from about 1966 ...

Re: 100D - the low down?

I've shot several rolls of 100D in my H16 SB, and can assure you that out in the open on a bright sunny day, you'll need an ND filter. I've used a .6 (2-stop) filter, and occasionally closed down the variable shutter for another stop. You didn't say whether your H16 is a reflex model. If so, you'll ...

Re: 16mm film cost?

I shoot Kodak 100D Reversal exclusively, buying the film directly from Kodak and sending all processing to Dwayne's Photo in Parsons Kansas. Roll + Processing + Shipping (incl. lab both ways) costs about $75 per roll. A roll runs 2:45 at 24fps. I haven't had any of my films transferred yet, so I can...

Re: E100VS discontinued...What does this mean for E100D?

Though I can't cite a recent article or bulletin, my recollection is that the "elite" line of films is the same formulation as the professional version. The only difference was release date. The elite version would be packaged and shipped for sale some months before reaching its "best...

Re: Bolex RX to plain old c

My understanding is that most "regular" C-mount lenses will mount fine on an RX; it's just that with 50mm and shorter lenses, the focus is off when you shoot below f4 or 5.6. For more info, see this article: http://www.city-net.com/~fodder/bolex/truth.html That said, I know that some older...

Re: Ilford SFX 200 Infrared 135-36 Black & White Print Film

The Efke IR820 film is still readily available. Apparently, it provides a more "traditional" IR look than the Ilford or Rollei films. I believe "traditional" means "like Kodak's discontinuted IR film."

Re: Schneider and Kern Lenses

Most books and articles I've read say not to mix different brand lenses because of differences in how they render color. I shoot with a Kern 10mm, Kern Vario Switar Compact (zoom), and an Angenieux 12-120 zoom. Everything I've shot so far has been on E100D and projected (~2 meters diagonal). I've no...

Re: Schneider and Kern Lenses

Is the Schneider lens optimized for Bolex Reflex cameras? If not, the focus won't be as sharp below f4 or f5.6 (I've seen many different opinions posted on this) than a lens optimized for the reflex viewing mechanism. Kern lenses optimized for reflex cameras are marked RX. I assume if the Schneider ...

Re: Anyone ever see a 16mm print like this before?

Judging by that frame it looks like it doesn't have any scratches so makes a good test film in an unknown projector. Coincidentally, I recently bought a rebuilt 16mm projector, and this was the first film I ran through it. It's an ideal test film because it's practically mint. It's an MTI productio...

Re: Anyone ever see a 16mm print like this before?

I have an '80s education film named "Read to Succeed" featuring Tempestt Bledsoe from the Cosby Show. Wonderful condition polyester print, but it's mastered from video. This kind of makes sense because it contains clips from the Cosby Show and some NFL football. It's a very professional jo...

Re: What ND filter for Canon 814XLS and E100D?

I started shooting 16mm E100D this year on a Bolex H-16 SB. I expose at ISO 64 to compensate light redirected throught the reflex system and for the 135-deg shutter. (It's either 135 or 145 deg, so definitely not XL). On bright sunny days, my 2-stop ND filter gets a fair amount of use. Sometimes I e...

Re: Filters with Bolex H16

I've been shooting with an H16 for the last 8 months, so while I don't consider myself an expert, I've dealt with this same question, and have a little insight. I have three lenses: Switar 10mm (silver preset version), Vario Switar Compact zoom, and Angenieux 12-120. The Angenieux has a 72mm thread,...

Re: Projecting Reversal

I thoroughly enjoy projecting movies and slides. I recently got a working regular 8mm projector and am currently watching home movies from the '60s that we haven't seen in at least 25 years. I've also shot some 16mm 100D and can confirm it looks amazing (as long as it's exposed correctly). Just reme...
