What sort of manual lighting have you tried for filming in low light conditions?

So is the concensus that if i'm wanting to film night city stuff I should go for a Super 8 XL model? Has anyone had any success filming night cityscapes? -Am i being too ambitious? Also again this may sound stupid, but roughly how long (time-wise) do you get to a cart of film? I'm just checking that...
